This weeks thoughts: "DoubleThink"..Crisis of Connection or New social norms?!

My skiing holiday is over. The Vision Pro has landed. I didn't see anyone wear it on the slopes. A blend of technology from AI to newest Oled. It seems like a small thing. Just a couple of units for the very first adopters. Maybe 800.000. if Samsung can deliver the screens. The Simsons had their predictions ready in 2016. It has been mocked. YouTubers have had the millions of views. Apple vision Bros have emerged. The long term vision is in place. The tech is ready. Now the execution.

The response of the early adopter has a range - Best tech I ever tried - to - Who is this for? What is your response? Here is mine:

I'm suffering of what George Orwell would call Doublethink (See the quote section). I love it and I hate it kind of mindset. Let me explain. I love the technology and the potential of it. I hate the fact that it is again aimed to boost individualism. Solitary engagement. Me, myself and I. While watching a movie with my wife during the holiday this thought hit me. If we both had the Vision Pro, but what about the kids, are we really together?

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to make this a philosophy piece. I just wanted to express the fact that we will cross another valley of connection. The question that holds me in its grip: "will it further our crisis of connection or will it become a new social norm?"

For now we laugh at the social media influencer. It is a fashion statement as much as it is glasses. Remember technology moves faster than you think. In just a couple of years it will not be as clunky and unruly. It will be small and elegant. Will we laugh then or wear it every day?

Only time will tell. I see a cycle of adaptation in 4 stages when it comes to new social norms that technology sets:

  1. We laugh, we hone.
  2. We distance, we condone
  3. We try, We moan
  4. We accept, we boast

I think im currently at Stage 3 As it technologist I love it. As a movie lover it will be amazing. As a used to be, washed up gamer, this is going to be cool.

Quotes I'm thinking about

"Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them."— George Orwell (1984)

“The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.”― Isaac Asimov

This weeks Tech article

DoubleThink as I said:

  • Technology marvel and why you should buy it, with early adopters standing inline. What do they think 🤔
  • Why are the early adopters retiring and returning the Apple Vision Pro? Is the honeymoon over? What is happing....
